Statement Regarding News of Local Malpractice
Dear Friends and Partners,
You may have seen recent local news reporting fraud and abuse involving several for-profit hospices operating in Monterey County. While these reports are deeply concerning, we want to offer clarity and reassurance about the role and values of Hospice Giving Foundation.
Hospice Giving Foundation exclusively supports nonprofit hospice, palliative care, and related organizations. Our grantee partners are mission-driven, community-accountable providers whose work is grounded in ethical, patient-centered care. We conduct careful due diligence and ongoing oversight to ensure our funding supports organizations that uphold the highest standards of integrity and compassion.
We also recognize that many for-profit hospices in our community provide high-quality, ethical care and are valued members of our Monterey County Palliative Care Collaborative.
We believe transparency and education are essential. For individuals and families navigating hospice decisions, a few important safeguards include:
- Ensuring hospice eligibility is certified by a physician based on medical criteria
- Avoiding providers that use pressure tactics or offer gifts or incentives for enrollment
- Asking questions and reviewing Medicare or insurance statements to confirm services received
- Using Medicare’s Care Compare tool to review hospice quality ratings and compare providers near you
Hospice care, when delivered appropriately, is one of the most humane and meaningful forms of healthcare. We remain steadfast in our commitment to strengthening nonprofit hospice care in our community and protecting the dignity of patients and families at the end of life.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
Warmly,

Erin White
