CEO Message: March 2020

Dear Friends,

I began composing this letter towards the end of February, thinking about HOPEGives. But today March 17th, as I return to writing, the world is in a healthcare crisis and we each need to examine how to instill confidence and hope. Our healthcare system will be taxed, and our patience will be tested. At Hospice Giving Foundation, our primary focus is to ensure excellent care for people with serious illness or facing the end of life. During this crisis we are resolved to bring you clear information and to guide you in your planning and preparation. Together with our community, we work to advance our commitment to caring, giving, together. Progress happens when guided by our mission and by learning from that which brings you hope.

We are inspired by leading HOPEGives. Helping people prepare for end of life by talking about it, by hosting workshops, and providing education, this movement is creating community and changing the conversation from avoidance to openness and from alone to together. At its core is what we all need –HOPE. When faced with serious illness, hope blossoms when people are treated with respect, when their wishes are honored, and when they receive the best possible, dignified care.

All the tools on our website are free for anyone to use. We have designed them to be easy to use and answer questions. We urge people in our community, and beyond, to plan for your future healthcare needs by completing an advance healthcare directive. This serious undertaking can save time, heartache, and resources. During the current healthcare crisis when we cannot convene for in-person meetings or workshops to help you prepare, we are happy to answer questions during our regular business hours of 8:30 am – 5:00 pm PST via email or phone. We are exploring other options to increase access to virtual support and guidance, so stay tuned.

We are opening our next grant season soon. Last year, grants went to local providers and newcomers. For the first time, we awarded funds to CSUMB for a feasibility study to assess the need and capacity for a Palliative Care curriculum for this region to expand our clinical workforce. We support outreach positions and collaboratives such as Juntos con Esperanza to improve services in South County. We look forward to ensuring the local agencies have the resources they need to provide the best possible care and support for patients and families facing serious illness.

It is because of the generosity of our supporters, that we can do this. Thank you. Your continued support makes this work possible for our community. Hospice Giving Foundation makes this work happen for the people you love.

My very best,

Siobhan Greene
