I am writing to express my profound gratitude for the invaluable support and guidance provided to our family during my mother’s battle with cancer, particularly while at Jerry’s Place. The compassionate care made an immeasurable difference during her final days.

My mother, Darlene Acosta, a vibrant 73-year-old, was still working and had dedicated her life to serving our community through drug and alcohol rehabilitation services and youth programs. In 2021, she was diagnosed with advanced cancer that had spread to her spine. Despite the devastating news, she approached her treatment with remarkable courage and determination.

As her only child, alongside my children, I stood by her side throughout her treatment regimen, juggling multiple appointments and the demands of everyday life. It was an incredibly challenging time, compounded by the lingering grief from the loss of my son just a few years prior.

Despite her determination, her condition deteriorated, and it became evident that her treatment was not yielding good results. It was then that she was introduced to Jerry’s Place through a compassionate doctor and several of Jerry’s Place’s advisory board members. Understanding the need for specialized care and assistance, especially considering her financial limitations, my mother embraced the opportunity the program offered.

Initially hesitant about the idea of her being hours away from our family, I was soon reassured by the exceptional level of care provided by Jerry’s Place. The team not only ensured her medical needs were met by hospice but also provided unwavering support to our family during this challenging time. Witnessing her comfort and peace, I was filled with both relief and profound appreciation for the true gift that had been bestowed upon us all.

One particular visit stands out in my memory – a quiet moment by her bedside, where she shared heartfelt words of love, gratitude, and life lessons. In her final days while in Jerry’s Place, she sought to ease my broken heart and imparted wisdom that would sustain me long after she was gone. Her passing, though heartbreaking, was peaceful, thanks to the care and dignity afforded to her by your dedicated staff.

Over a year has passed since her departure, and I remain profoundly grateful to Jerry’s Place for guiding us through such a difficult journey. The support not only ensured her comfort and dignity but also facilitated healing within our fractured family.

My mother’s legacy lives on through the love and compassion she shared, and your organization played an integral role in honoring her memory. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to providing compassionate end-of-life care and for being a beacon of hope during our darkest days.
