Social Worker, Care Coordinator, Coastal Kids Home Care
Ruth Emerson joined Coastal Kids in 2011. She wasn’t looking for a job. She was looking for a vocation, and we believe she found it. From day one, Ruth indelibly changed Coastal Kids’ ability to provide excellent care to the children and families we serve. She immersed herself in our pediatric palliative care program and immediately became an indispensable member of our clinical team. Her humor, compassion, and talent as a counselor have earned her accolades among our families, staff, and community partners. Because of Ruth’s openheartedness and ability to listen deeply, she is able to help families navigate sensitive goals of care conversations, understand care options, and cope with the tremendous grief associated with a child’s terminal illness. She especially prides herself on being present with families at the time of their child’s death or immediately afterwards. “This is when I feel I’m doing my best work,” she says.
Ruth also extends her support to our staff; providing one-on-one grief support when a child dies, or helping to resolve unexpected practical or emotional challenges that arise in the household. The quality of all our lives is immeasurably improved by Ruth’s passion, humor, and dedication.
